The original course, built by hand and horse, was designed by old Tom Morris and has been the home to the Honourable Company of Edinburgh golfers since 1891. Many years before moving to Muirfield the Honourable Company drafted the first Code of Rules and established themselves as the oldest club in the world. Many memorable Opens have been played here and I'm certain there will be more to follow.

Gullane has 3 courses simply called 1, 2 and 3. Gullane 1 is undoubtably one of my favourite courses in Scotland. It's undulating tightly mown fairways, sculptured bunkers and beautiful greens always inspire me. From the 3rd hole onwards, after climbing Gullane Hill, you are surrounded by scenery of magnificent golf links that typifies a golfers paradise. Gullane 2 is a great test of golf and many of the locals say it is a tougher test than No1.

North Berwick is a fine example of true links with scenic views over the Forth estuary. Several holes come to mind at North Berwick but two in particular the 13th and 16th . At the 365 yard par 4 13th the approach shot to the green is almost blind as the green is closely tucked behind a wall. The sixteenth (pictured) has a drive over a ditch and an unusually shaped green in the form of two plateaux seperated by a huge gulley running through the centre. Other great courses in the area include- Dunbar, Longniddry, Kilspindie, Luffness.

There is a wide choice of accommodation on offer in this area. Traditional hotels, guest houses etc. Most of the courses mentioned above are within 40 minutes drive of Edinburgh city centre. Edinburgh with its endless choice of accommodation, restaurants, shopping, history and culture is a good centre. Don't worry about the family, they'll have a ball in Edinburgh while you enjoy a game on the links.
